Canada: We Are Preparing a Plan to Help Cuba

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced that Canada is working on a plan to provide assistance to Cuba, despite tariff threats from the United States.

Speaking at a press conference at Parliament Hill, Anand stated that the Canadian government is developing a plan to support Cuba.

“We are preparing a plan to help Cuba. However, the Canadian government is not in a position at this time to provide details regarding a possible announcement on the matter,” she said.

What Happened?

In late January, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order authorizing the imposition of import tariffs on goods from countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba. He also declared a state of emergency, citing what he described as a national security threat originating from Havana.

Following the decision, the Cuban government accused the United States of attempting to suffocate the Caribbean nation’s economy and make living conditions unbearable for its people.

Mexico has turned to diplomatic channels in Washington in an effort to resume oil shipments to Cuba without the threat of tariffs. Meanwhile, two logistics vessels belonging to the Mexican Navy have been sent to the island carrying 814 tons of essential supplies. An additional 1,500 tons of powdered milk and beans are reportedly awaiting shipment.

For its part, Russia pledged in early February to continue supplying oil to the island. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandr Novak also stated that Moscow is currently working on providing assistance to Cuba.
