Cuba: The U.S. Is Punishing Our People

The Cuban government has accused the United States of “collectively punishing” its people through economic sanctions and restrictions on oil supplies. Havana also claimed that Washington is taking steps aimed at overthrowing the government and warned of “unwavering resistance” against any potential foreign intervention.

Strong reaction to U.S. sanctions

In a statement, Cuba’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the sanctions imposed by the U.S. directly target the Cuban population. The ministry stressed that Washington has intensified economic pressure that has been ongoing for nearly 60 years and is making threats to forcibly change the country’s constitutional order.

“An economic war is being waged”

The statement emphasized that the U.S. is using Cuba’s weakened economy as a pretext to impose harsher sanctions.

Cuban authorities accused Washington with the following remarks:
“The U.S. is using the limitations created by the very economy it targets as an excuse. It is making plans to seize the country’s resources, properties, and economy, and is openly expressing this.”

Havana described the process as an “economic war.”

Emphasis on “collective punishment”

Cuba stated that U.S. policies affect not only the government but also civilians directly, arguing that this amounts to “collective punishment” under international law.

The statement also included a warning: “Any external aggressor will face unwavering resistance,” signaling a firm stance against possible interventions.

U.S. move on oil

One of the key steps escalating tensions was an executive order signed by U.S. President Donald Trump on January 30.

Under this decision, tariffs are to be imposed on all goods coming from countries that supply oil to Cuba.

The White House defended the move, stating it was intended to protect U.S. national security and foreign policy interests.

Deepening oil crisis

On February 1, Trump announced that talks had begun regarding oil supply to Cuba, a claim denied by the Cuban government.

Havana also stated that it has activated emergency plans in response to the risk of disruptions in external oil supplies.
