Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel sharply criticized the United States over its latest sanctions and allegations against Havana, comparing Washington’s policies to McCarthyism, the ideological crackdown that marked the United States in the 1950s.
In a statement shared on social media, President Díaz-Canel accused the U.S. administration of pursuing what he described as a “baseless ideological witch hunt.”
He wrote:
“A new and even more dangerous version of McCarthyism has returned in the United States. The imperialist right and its allies have become dangerously radical. Among other crimes, they are responsible for the genocide in Gaza, extrajudicial killings, the persecution of migrants, torture and murder, the bombing of a school for girls in Iran, and the genocidal blockade imposed on the Cuban people. The list is endless. The real threat to humanity is the philosophy of plunder that drives the international far right toward acts of war.”
According to Cuba’s national media, Díaz-Canel likened U.S. policy toward Cuba to McCarthyism, describing it as an unfounded, ideologically motivated “witch hunt.”
McCarthyism refers to the anti-communist campaign and period of political repression led by U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy during the 1950s, when individuals were accused of communist affiliations with little or no credible evidence.
