Former South Korean Prime Minister Han Sentenced to 23 Years in Prison

In South Korea, former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has been sentenced to 23 years in prison on charges of playing a key role in an “insurrection” by supporting former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s attempt to impose martial law.

Former South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo was convicted for backing former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s short-lived declaration of martial law and for allegedly playing a critical role in the ensuing “uprising,” receiving a sentence of 23 years in prison.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, the Seoul District Court handed down the sentence in the first ruling to officially confirm that the declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024, constituted an act of insurrection.

Han had assumed the role of acting president following the removal of former President Yoon from office. In a statement made on the morning of May 1, 2025, Han Duck-soo announced his resignation.

Former President Yoon Sentenced to Five Years in Prison

It was previously announced that former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed from office, was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of abuse of power and forgery of official documents in a case related to the martial law attempt.
