The French government has announced that it will open a consulate in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on February 6—an area sought by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said in an interview on a France-based radio program that France aims to strengthen its presence in Greenland in every respect, given the island’s energy resources and strategic location, which have drawn the attention of the United States.
Minister Barrot emphasized that the decision to open a French consulate in Nuuk is a clear indication of this intention.
He recalled that French President Emmanuel Macron announced the opening of the France–Nuuk Consulate during his visit to the island last year, and confirmed that it will officially open on February 6.
With this move, France will join the group of countries that have diplomatic representation in Greenland.
