Germany: Talks with France on Nuclear Deterrence Are at an Early Stage

Germany has stated that discussions between Friedrich Merz and Emmanuel Macron on establishing a joint European nuclear deterrent are still at an early stage, emphasizing that the initiative does not aim to reduce the role of the United States.

Speaking at a press conference, a German government spokesperson said:

“The purpose of the talks is to explore how closer cooperation in the field of nuclear deterrence can be achieved. The discussions are still at a very early stage.”

The spokesperson added:

“This is not about replacing the U.S. protective umbrella, but rather about complementing and strengthening it. The United States plays a central role in NATO’s nuclear deterrence. That is the case today, and we want it to remain so in the future.”

Dependent on the U.S. for the ‘Nuclear Umbrella’

Europe remains dependent on the United States for its nuclear umbrella, which consists of American weapons deployed on the continent and NATO’s mutual defense pact.

Currently, only the United Kingdom and France possess nuclear weapons in Europe.
