Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen made statements regarding the country’s status. Nielsen said that Greenland will not belong to the United States, will not be governed by the U.S., and will not become part of the United States.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Nielsen said:
“If we were forced to choose right now between the United States and Denmark, we would choose Denmark. We would choose NATO. We would choose the Kingdom of Denmark. We would choose the European Union.”
Frederiksen: Greenland Is Not for Sale
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said:
“In Greenland, you should know that we stand together. That is how it is today, that is how it will be tomorrow, and we will continue this way.”
Referring to security balances in the Arctic region, Frederiksen said cooperation with the United States, NATO, and Europe should be strengthened:
“We want to strengthen security cooperation with the United States, NATO, Europe, and our NATO allies in the Arctic.”
Addressing the United States, the Danish prime minister added:
“Our message is clear: Greenland is not for sale. We have said this from the very beginning. We have also made it clear to the Americans from the outset that when it comes to security, there is much more we can do together, and we will repeat this at tomorrow’s meeting.”
