At a joint press conference with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, Türkiye’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the war involving Iran must end as soon as possible and warned against any plans aimed at triggering a civil war in the country. Wadephul, for his part, referred to the possibility of a new refugee wave.
Key remarks from Hakan Fidan
“We also discussed current issues. This war must end as soon as possible. As Türkiye, we are making intensive efforts to end the war. Our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is conducting intense diplomatic traffic.”
“We are in contact with our neighbors and partners. At the same time, we see that separatist scenarios are now being brought to the agenda for Iran.”
“We are absolutely against any plans aimed at triggering a civil war in Iran. We are already warning those who attempt to get involved in such adventures.”
On the possibility of a ceasefire between Iran and the U.S.
Responding to a question about whether a ceasefire could occur between Iran and the United States, Fidan said:
“The intensification of clashes is making the need for negotiations even more evident for the parties involved.”
“Previous negotiations unfortunately resulted in war, and naturally there is a crisis of trust among the parties—particularly on the Iranian side.”
“Work is currently ongoing on what kind of proposal package could be presented to both sides under these circumstances. I cannot provide further details at the moment.”
Wadephul: Türkiye Could Play an Important Role
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Türkiye could play a very important role and emphasized that they want to work together in coordination.
“Iran needs to end its ballistic missile program. No one would want to see chaos in Iran. At this stage, the war must not escalate further. There are issues we must address in order to end this conflict.”
Referring to migration concerns, Wadephul said:
“After the civil war in Syria, Türkiye demonstrated great capacity by accepting about four million people. Many still live in Türkiye, while some have returned.”
“For Türkiye, the issue of potential refugees from Iran is also coming onto the agenda. Of course, we want to prevent this, and that is why we remain in contact with Türkiye.”
