Who is Ali Larijani?

Ali Larijani is an Iranian politician who served as the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. He has long been considered one of the influential conservative figures in Iranian politics.

Ali Ardeshir Larijani was born on June 3, 1958, in Najaf. According to open sources, he completed his undergraduate studies in computer science at Sharif University (formerly Aryamehr University of Technology). He later earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Tehran.

Larijani served as the head of Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB from 1994 to 2004. Between 2005 and 2007, he was Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator. From 2008 to 2020, he served as the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, holding the position for 12 years.

Larijani, who is also one of the advisors to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, is one of the most prominent members of the Larijani family, which has been influential in Iran’s political and security bureaucracy. Other members of his family have held important positions in the judiciary and academia.
