Kallas: The Conflict in the Middle East Must Not Distract from Ukraine

The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, expressed concern that the conflict in the Middle East could reduce international attention on Ukraine.

Kallas stated that rising tensions in Iran and across the Middle East risk pushing the issue of Ukraine down the international agenda, saying, “This issue must not fall off the agenda, as it represents a real and very imminent threat to Europe.”

Speaking at a press conference following a meeting of the Baltic foreign ministers, Kallas said, “We are concerned about this situation becoming a distraction. That is precisely why we held this meeting today. We cannot allow the issue of Ukraine to drop from the agenda because it is a real and very close threat to Europe.”

Kallas also voiced concerns about the allocation of resources in the region, stating, “It is worrying that all the capabilities and resources needed in the Middle East are also necessary for Ukraine.”
