German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on Europe to act more independently from the United States, saying, “Trump can be criticized, but what is the use of criticism if the person it is directed at does not care?”
Speaking at an event, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Europe to pursue greater independence from the United States and made several remarks about Washington. In his speech, Merz said:
“We see that our most important ally in the world—until now the United States—has moved away from the rules-based order.”
Trump Can Be Criticized, But What Is the Point?

“However, if the person being criticized does not respond and believes what they are doing is right, what is the benefit of criticism?”
