Venezuela’s Interim President Delcy Rodriguez said that a draft general amnesty law covering individuals detained in the country since 1999 will be submitted to parliament.
Rodriguez stated that the Venezuelan government will present a general amnesty bill to the legislative body covering the period from 1999 to the present.
Speaking at an event attended by representatives of the judiciary and the legislature, Rodriguez used the following expressions:
“We have decided to enact a general amnesty law that will cover the entire period of political violence from 1999 to the present.”
According to local media reports, Rodriguez also noted that the decision was discussed with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who was detained by the United States on January 3.
Following U.S. airstrikes on Venezuela and the simultaneous detention of Nicolas Maduro by the United States, his deputy Delcy Rodriguez was sworn in before parliament and officially assumed the role of Interim President on January 5.
In her speech at the time, Rodriguez said,
“I am here with deep sorrow over the kidnapping of our President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, who are being held hostage in the United States.”
