Russia Appoints Vershinin as New Ambassador to Türkiye

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin has been appointed as Russia’s new Ambassador to Türkiye.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree relieving Sergey Vershinin of his duties as Deputy Foreign Minister and appointing him as Ambassador to Türkiye.

With Putin’s signature, Vershinin will take over the post from former Ambassador Aleksey Yerhov, who is leaving Ankara after completing his term. Yerhov served as Russia’s Ambassador to Ankara from 2017 to 2025, contributing significantly to the development of Russian-Turkish relations during his eight-year tenure.

Vershinin Prominent in Middle East Diplomacy

Vershinin served as Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Middle East and North Africa Department from 2005 to 2018. During this period, he also represented Russia within the Middle East Quartet (the United States, the European Union, the United Nations, and Russia).

Starting in 2013, Vershinin became one of the key Russian representatives involved in diplomatic efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis. He played an active role in talks held between Syrian parties in Astana, Geneva, and Vienna.

Vershinin had been serving as Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister since March 2018.
