Sergey Vasilyevich Vershinin, appointed as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Türkiye, arrived in Ankara on March 25. The ambassador was welcomed by representatives of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and members of the Russian Embassy in Ankara.
Vershinin was appointed by a decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, replacing former Ambassador Aleksey Yerhov, whose term had ended. Yerhov served as Ambassador to Ankara from 2017 to 2025 and made significant contributions to the development of Russia–Türkiye relations during his eight-year tenure.
An Experienced Figure in Middle Eastern Diplomacy
Sergey Vershinin served as Director of the Middle East and North Africa Department at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2018. During this period, he represented Russia within the framework of the Middle East Quartet (the United States, the European Union, the United Nations, and Russia).
Starting in 2013, Vershinin also played a key role in diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the Syrian crisis. He actively participated in talks held in Astana, Geneva, and Vienna between Syrian parties.
Since March 2018, Vershinin has been serving as Russia’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
