Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid stated that they could provide support to Tehran in the event of a possible U.S. attack on Iran. Emphasizing that they do not seek conflict, Mujahid argued that Iran has the capacity to defend itself. The remarks have once again brought the current state of Taliban–Iran relations into focus.
The Taliban administration in Afghanistan made a notable statement regarding potential tension scenarios between Washington and Tehran.
In an interview with Radio Iran’s Pashto service, Mujahid said, “If the U.S. attacks Iran, we will provide help and support.”
However, he particularly stressed that this statement does not mean the Taliban would automatically enter into war against the United States.
Emphasis on “We Do Not Want Conflict”
Mujahid stated that the Taliban administration does not want a conflict between the U.S. and Iran, adding that they prefer diplomatic channels and negotiations to continue regarding the nuclear program.
He also claimed that Iran “won” the 12-day conflict it experienced in June with Israel and the United States. Mujahid asserted that if the U.S. were to attack again, Iran would “win again,” arguing that Tehran “has the capacity and the right to defend itself.”
During that period, the Taliban administration had also condemned Israel’s operations targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities and military sites.
A New Phase in Taliban–Iran Relations
After the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan in 2021, Taliban–Iran relations gradually strengthened.
In January 2025, Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi hosted a delegation led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Kabul. The talks addressed the following issues:
- Water resources
- Afghan migrants
- Border security
Iran has continued to host millions of Afghan refugees who left the country after the Taliban took control in 2021.
Mossad Allegation and Sensitive Balances
In June, Tehran alleged that some Afghans had provided intelligence to Mossad during Israel’s operations. This claim once again brought the delicate balance between the two countries into the spotlight.
According to experts, the Taliban’s latest statement is considered a development that should be closely monitored in terms of both regional power dynamics and potential tensions along the U.S.–Iran axis.
