Türkiye’s Presidency of Communications announced that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone call with U.S. President Donald Trump, during which bilateral relations between Türkiye and the United States, as well as regional and global developments, were discussed.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated at the very end of a press conference at the White House that he would have a phone call with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. A few hours after Trump’s remarks, the Turkish Presidency of Communications released a statement providing information about the phone call between Erdoğan and Trump.
According to the statement, the leaders discussed bilateral Türkiye–U.S. relations, along with regional and global issues. Syria and Gaza constituted the main items on the agenda of the call.
During the conversation, President Erdoğan emphasized that Türkiye is closely monitoring developments in Syria and stressed that Syria’s unity, territorial integrity, and national cohesion are of great importance to Türkiye.
The statement also noted that the fight against ISIS and the situation of ISIS members held in prisons in Syria were discussed. President Erdoğan underlined that a fully developed, terror-free, and peaceful Syria would contribute to stability in the region.
Erdoğan also stated that efforts to establish peace in Gaza are ongoing and that Türkiye will continue to act in coordination with the United States on this issue.
President Erdoğan thanked Trump for the invitation to the Gaza Peace Council.
Trump: “It Was a Very Good Phone Call”
As U.S. President Trump was leaving the White House to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, he answered questions from members of the press.
Asked how his conversation with President Erdoğan went, Trump replied, “It was a very good phone call.”
