Chinese President Xi Jinping described China and India as “good neighbors, friends, and partners” in a message marking India’s Republic Day, signaling efforts to stabilize relations after years of border tensions.
In his message to India on the occasion of Republic Day, Xi said that China and India are “good neighbors, friends, and partners,” according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
“The Dragon and the Elephant Can Dance Together”
Xi noted that China–India relations have seen improvement and development over the past year, saying this is of “great significance for safeguarding and promoting world peace and prosperity.” Using the metaphor of “the dragon and the elephant dancing together,” Xi called for greater mutual understanding and cooperation.
Cautious Rapprochement After Border Tensions
The two nuclear-armed Asian countries share a disputed border of about 3,800 kilometers, a source of tension since the 1950s. Relations deteriorated sharply after deadly clashes in the Himalayas in 2020, which resulted in the deaths of soldiers on both sides.
Despite this, the two sides have taken steps since last year to repair ties through high-level engagements. Direct flights resumed in 2025, and trade and investment contacts have accelerated.
