New Crisis on the US–France Line

Diplomatic tensions are escalating between the United States and France. The U.S. Ambassador to Paris, Charles Kushner, failed to attend a meeting at the French Foreign Ministry despite being summoned over statements made by the Embassy regarding the killing of a young man in Lyon. Following his refusal, his ability to hold direct meetings with French ministers has reportedly been restricted.

The crisis was triggered by violent clashes on February 12 in Lyon between left-wing and far-right groups. A young man named Quentin Deranque lost his life during the incidents.

The U.S. Embassy in Paris stated on X (formerly Twitter) that reports suggesting the young man was “killed by far-left militants should concern us all.” The statement emphasized that “violent far-left extremism is on the rise in France” and poses a threat to public safety.

Paris viewed these remarks as political commentary and interference in France’s internal affairs.

French Media: A New Tension

French media described the developments as a “new tension on the Paris–Washington line.”

Le Figaro and Le Monde reported the story under the headline: “U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner did not attend the Foreign Ministry despite being summoned.”

HuffPost France ran the headline: “Anger among French authorities after new tensions created by the U.S. Ambassador.”

France 24 described the diplomatic dispute as: “U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner sanctioned for not attending the Foreign Ministry.”

La Croix referred to Kushner as “Trump’s in-law, known for his undiplomatic remarks.”

TF1 and Le Point wrote that the ambassador had “snubbed the French Foreign Ministry” and was “testing Paris’s limits.”

Kushner Had Previously Been Summoned

U.S. Ambassador to Paris Charles Kushner had previously been summoned over accusations that France was not doing enough to combat rising antisemitism in the country.

On that occasion as well, Kushner did not attend the meeting in person, sending members of his team instead.

Diplomatic Measure: Direct Contact Limited

According to French diplomatic sources, Kushner’s failure to attend the summons has resulted in restrictions on his ability to meet directly with French government officials.

The move is seen less as a formal sanction and more as a de facto limitation implemented within the framework of diplomatic protocol.

Trump Family Connection Draws Attention

Charles Kushner, the U.S. Ambassador to Paris, is the father of Jared Kushner. Jared Kushner is the son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump and the husband of Ivanka Trump.

French media have also highlighted Kushner’s close ties to the Trump family and his connections with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
