At the invitation of the Syrian government, Türkiye has taken part in an international task force aimed at destroying chemical weapons remnants in the country.
According to information obtained by Anadolu Agency from sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a decision was adopted at the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on October 10, 2025, to support the Syrian government in the expedited, on-site destruction of chemical weapons remnants.
Although, under the Chemical Weapons Convention, each country bears national responsibility for destroying its own chemical weapons and related remnants, the Syrian government has, in cooperation with the OPCW, established an international task force to identify, verify, secure, and eliminate the remnants of its chemical weapons program.
Within this framework, Türkiye has formally joined the task force. The task force also includes Qatar, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, and the OPCW Technical Secretariat.
