Heat Alert in France: Three Nuclear Reactors Shut Down

Three nuclear reactors have been taken offline in France as an intense heatwave continues to grip the country.

France’s state-owned energy company EDF announced that reactors at the Bugey Nuclear Power Plant in eastern France and the Nogent-sur-Seine Nuclear Power Plant northeast of Paris were shut down due to environmental conditions.

The company also said that power output at one reactor at the Saint-Alban Nuclear Power Plant had been reduced. The measures were taken to prevent river water temperatures from exceeding environmental safety limits.

France’s 57 nuclear reactors generate approximately 70 percent of the country’s electricity.
