Following Israel’s unanimous approval of a decision recognizing the 1915 Armenian events as “genocide,” Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the move as a “distortion of history” and called on Israel to reconsider its position. Türkiye, meanwhile, characterized the decision as a political move aimed at diverting attention from Gaza.
In a statement, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said that Israel’s decision to recognize the so-called Armenian Genocide was “a matter of serious concern.” It stressed that transforming the events of 1915 into a political decision without a legal or scientific basis was unacceptable.
Israeli Cabinet Approves the Decision Unanimously
The decision was unanimously approved by the Israeli Cabinet the previous day. However, the Cabinet’s approval is not the final step. The proposal must still be voted on in the plenary session of the Knesset (Israel’s Parliament) before it can take effect.
While announcing the decision, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said, “It is never too late to do the right thing.”
Türkiye Criticizes the Move as an Attempt to “Overshadow Gaza”
Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described Israel’s initiative as politically motivated. Ankara argued that the decision was linked to the legal proceedings against Israel at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the Gaza Strip, alleging that Israel was attempting to divert attention from its own conduct.
