South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the sister of the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, to serve the remainder of his term, which expires in January.
Speaking at a press conference, Governor McMaster said that, under state law, he has the authority to appoint a replacement to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate.
Accordingly, he named Nordone to complete the late Senator Graham’s term through January.
South Carolina’s other Republican senator, Tim Scott, also announced his full support for the appointment.
Darline Graham Nordone, 62, is expected to be sworn into office today. With her appointment, she will become the first woman in South Carolina’s history to serve as a U.S. senator at the federal level.
