Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that Moscow and Beijing share a common position against the West’s policies of “regime change,” “double standards,” and “unilateral sanctions.” Lavrov also expressed Russia’s appreciation for China’s balanced approach to the Ukraine crisis.
In an article published in the Russian newspaper Kommersant to mark the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation between Russia and China, Lavrov outlined the two countries’ shared vision for global affairs.
“The West Is Acting with a Colonial Mindset”
Lavrov argued that the West is attempting to destabilize the current international order and said that Russia and China stand united in opposing such efforts.
He wrote:
“Together with our Chinese friends, we advocate political and diplomatic solutions based on addressing the root causes of conflicts. We will never accept policies of ‘regime change,’ ‘double standards,’ or ‘unilateral sanctions.'”
Lavrov stressed that this shared approach is particularly important at a time when, in his view, Western countries are pursuing a neo-colonial strategy to preserve their global dominance. He also claimed that the West seeks to dismantle the international legal order founded on the principles of the United Nations Charter.
Lavrov Thanks China for Its Position on Ukraine
The Russian foreign minister also expressed appreciation for Beijing’s approach to the war in Ukraine, saying China has correctly understood the origins of the conflict.
“We highly appreciate the constructive and balanced position of the People’s Republic of China regarding the situation in Ukraine—a position that demonstrates a deep understanding of the emergence and root causes of the crisis while focusing on a political solution,” Lavrov said.
Putin and Xi Share a Common Vision for Eurasian Security
Lavrov also addressed the future of Russia-China strategic cooperation, emphasizing that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s global vision is fully aligned with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s initiative to build “an equal and indivisible security architecture in Eurasia.”
He added that Russia is ready to work toward integrating these two major initiatives at both the official government level and through cooperation between expert communities in the two countries.
