The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) has added a total of 130 scientific and educational institutions from Russia, China, and Iran to its list of organizations it claims pose a threat to U.S. national security.
The list includes 33 institutions from Russia, among them some of the country’s leading higher education establishments, such as Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), the Higher School of Economics (HSE), and Bauman Moscow State Technical University.
The Pentagon accuses these institutions of “engaging in activities that increase the risk of misuse of the results of government-funded research.”
In its statement, the Pentagon urged U.S. researchers and industry partners to exercise “special caution” when engaging with the listed institutions, stating:
“We advise domestic researchers, academic institutions, and industry partners to exercise special caution when considering opportunities for collaboration, funding, or data sharing with any institution included on this list.”
The Pentagon said the measure was introduced to prevent the transfer of technology to countries it claims pose risks to U.S. national security.
