Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov extended his condolences to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during a phone call over the death of an Iranian sailor killed in a Ukrainian drone attack.
According to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov conveyed his condolences to his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, following the death of an Iranian crew member in a Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) strike.
The ministry stated, “The Russian foreign minister expressed his sincere condolences over the death of an Iranian sailor resulting from the attack carried out by Ukrainian UAVs on July 25 against the Iranian dry cargo vessel Ana, which had departed from Astrakhan carrying civilian cargo.”
The ministry added that Lavrov also expressed his support and sympathy to the victim’s family and loved ones and wished the injured crew member a speedy recovery.
The Russian Foreign Ministry further noted that Araghchi briefed Lavrov on ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East following the U.S. strike on Iran.
Earlier, Iran’s Foreign Ministry had announced that Ukraine carried out a military attack on an Iranian commercial vessel, killing one sailor and injuring another.
