The death toll from severe flooding in the northeastern Indian state of Assam has risen to 78, with more than 1.1 million people affected by the disaster.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) provided an update on the flood situation across the state.
In a statement posted on its official social media account, the ASDMA said that the bodies of three more victims had been recovered, bringing the total number of fatalities to 78.
“Search, rescue, and relief operations are continuing without interruption to support people in the affected areas,” the statement said.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that more than 1.1 million people have been affected by the disaster, while eight people remain missing. He added that approximately 1,718 relief camps are currently operating across the region.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) also warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several parts of Assam over the next three to four days.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid non-essential travel during periods of intense rainfall.
