A third arrest warrant has been issued for former Bolivian President Evo Morales over his alleged role in anti-government protests. Morales rejected the accusations as politically motivated, vowing to continue his political struggle.
According to Bolivian media reports, prosecutors are investigating Morales over his alleged involvement in protests demanding the resignation of the president. He faces charges including endangering transportation safety, forming a criminal organization, publicly inciting criminal acts, and attacking the security of public services.
With the latest ruling, three separate arrest warrants have now been issued against Morales. The former president was also declared a fugitive in May.
Morales: “They Will Not Intimidate Us”
In a statement posted on social media, Morales argued that the accusations against him are politically motivated. He claimed that the government is attempting to divert attention from the country’s deep economic and social crisis by blaming him for the protests.
Vowing to continue his campaign, Morales said:
“They will not intimidate us. Together with our people, we will continue to fight for dignity, sovereignty, social justice, and hope.”
Protests Left 16 Dead
During demonstrations that lasted for about seven weeks in May and June, protesters backed by Morales supporters blocked roads across western and central Bolivia.
The demonstrators demanded the resignation of the president, while road blockades caused shortages of food, fuel, and medical oxygen in several cities.
According to authorities, at least 16 people were killed during the protests. Officials said that 13 of the victims died because emergency medical teams were unable to reach them in time due to the roadblocks. The demonstrations are also estimated to have caused economic losses exceeding $3 billion.
Remains in Cochabamba
Morales has remained in the Cochabamba region since October 2024, where he is being protected by supporters in an effort to prevent the execution of a separate arrest warrant issued in connection with a human trafficking investigation.
