Former Pakistani Prime Minister and founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, who is currently being held in prison, was taken to hospital for medical checkups. Khan underwent eye and heart examinations as well as a general health assessment, and doctors reportedly found his condition to be good.
Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announced that Khan was transferred to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for medical examinations and was later taken back to Adiala Prison.
Tarar stated that Khan had initially been scheduled to be taken to Al Shifa Hospital, but he was instead transferred to PIMS due to a security situation caused by PTI supporters gathering outside the hospital.
Eye and Heart Examinations Conducted
Imran Khan was taken to the hospital late at night under security measures implemented in line with a Supreme Court ruling. A medical team consisting of an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist and a general practitioner examined him.
Tarar said doctors assessed Khan’s health as “good” following the examinations. Khan’s sister was also reportedly present at the hospital during the medical examination.
After the examinations and other medical procedures were completed, the former prime minister was taken back to Adiala Prison.
Why Is Imran Khan in Prison?
Imran Khan left office as prime minister after losing a vote of confidence in Pakistan’s National Assembly in April 2022.
On May 9, 2023, Khan was arrested by paramilitary forces in Islamabad, triggering widespread protests across the country. Demonstrations took place in several cities, particularly Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar. Nine people were killed and more than 290 others were injured during the unrest.
Khan was released by a court order on May 12, 2023, but was arrested again on August 5, 2023, following an arrest warrant issued in connection with a corruption case and sent back to prison.
Imran Khan, who has been sentenced to prison in several cases, has remained incarcerated since then.
