Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. During the conversation, the leaders discussed bilateral Turkey–Iran relations as well as the escalating military tensions in the region.
In a statement, the Presidency’s Directorate of Communications said, “Our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.”
The statement included the following points:
- The leaders discussed bilateral relations between Turkey and Iran and the rising military tensions in the region.
- President Erdoğan emphasized that Turkey is ready to assume a facilitating role between Iran and the United States in order to de-escalate tensions and help resolve outstanding issues.
- The President also noted during the call that he would receive Iran’s Foreign Minister later today in Türkiye.
Latest developments in U.S.–Iran tensions
There are currently no serious negotiations underway between the United States and Iran, although moves and statements from the U.S. side continue.
Iranian officials have repeatedly warned of harsh retaliation should the United States carry out an attack.
The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has arrived in the region.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the naval force he has assembled off the coast of Iran is larger than the one deployed near Venezuela, adding that “time is running out.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is meeting today in Türkiye with Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
