Trump: US will not attack Canada out of respect for its history

US President Donald Trump has put an end to discussions about making Canada the 51st state. Emphasizing respect for Canada’s deep-rooted history and its ties to the British monarchy, Trump stated that there are no military or political plans for annexation. The remarks were interpreted as a new message in bilateral relations.

Trump made a fresh statement regarding the long-debated idea of incorporating Canada into the United States.

He stressed that there are no plans for any military intervention or annexation of Canada, citing respect for the country’s historical and political structure as the main reason.

“You cannot ignore 200 years of history”

Speaking to the British press, Trump highlighted Canada’s past, saying:

“Canadians have 200 years of history behind them. You cannot change something like that in just a few years. That’s why I don’t think this will happen.”

With these remarks, Trump signaled a step back from earlier discussions suggesting that Canada could become the 51st state of the US.

Emphasis on the monarchy

Trump also referred to Canada’s political system, noting that the British monarchy still symbolically remains the head of state.

The US president stated that they have no intention of interfering with this structure and respect Canada’s current system.

Message ahead of royal visit

Trump’s comments came ahead of the planned official visit of King Charles III and Queen Camilla to the United States.

The visit is expected to conclude with a formal reception at the White House. In this context, Trump’s statement is seen as a diplomatically timed message.

Previous remarks drew criticism

In the past, Trump had argued that Canada was economically dependent on Washington and suggested that it should join the United States.

These statements sparked backlash in Canada, with Prime Minister Mark Carney firmly stating that his country would “never become part of the United States.”
