Iran slams EU: “Moral bankruptcy and hypocrisy”

Iran’s Embassy in London strongly criticized European Council President Antonio Costa after he blamed Tehran for escalating tensions in the Middle East, accusing European leadership of “moral bankruptcy” and “hypocrisy.”

The Iranian Embassy in London accused Costa of moral failure after he held Iran responsible for fueling the conflict in the region.

In a statement shared on social media, the embassy said:

“Millions of conscientious Europeans condemn the war crimes committed by the United States and Israel against Iran; yet the EU’s top official cannot even bring himself to mention ‘Israel’ and instead blames Iran. This is not diplomacy; this is moral bankruptcy and hypocrisy. Forget international law, justice, and ethics—this is complete nonsense. Europe’s leadership has hit rock bottom.”

In his post, Costa called on Iran to halt attacks on regional targets and to allow free passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz. He also urged negotiations led by regional actors. Notably, his statement made no reference to alleged aggression by the United States or Israel against Iran.

Costa further warned against attacks on civilian infrastructure, particularly energy facilities, following remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump that the U.S. military could launch simultaneous strikes on all energy plants in Iran if Washington and Tehran fail to reach an agreement before Tuesday’s deadline.
