Alarm Scenario in the UK: Food Shortages Possible if War Continues

In the United Kingdom, government officials are reportedly preparing for scenarios in which food supply disruptions could occur if the Iran war continues. Particular concern has been raised over products such as chicken and pork.

A government source stated that contingency plans are being developed in case the ongoing conflict with Iran leads to disruptions in food supply.

The scenario is based on the possibility of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and potential interruptions in the supply of carbon dioxide (CO2).

The source emphasized that this is not a prediction but a preparedness plan and does not necessarily mean there will be a shortage of food.

The Role of CO2 in Food Production

It was noted that CO2 is used in the slaughter of certain animals and in food preservation processes.

UK Business Secretary Peter Kyle reportedly stated that, at present, CO2 supply is “not a concern for the British economy.”

The same official also added, “People should continue their normal lives for now.”

Current State of the Supply Chain

Retail executive Ken Murphy stated that no issues have been observed in food supply so far.

Murphy said, “We are not seeing any signs of problems in our supply chain at the moment… we are in a good position in terms of product availability.”

He also pointed to uncertainty regarding prices, noting, “We don’t know how this will evolve because it is a highly volatile and unpredictable situation.”

Prices and Global Impact

Following attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, oil and diesel prices have increased, affecting food production costs.

A representative of a farmers’ union indicated that prices for certain products could rise in the coming weeks.

International organizations have also warned that if the conflict continues, the global economy could enter a recession.
