In the United States, allegations regarding the living conditions of the crew aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier have reignited criticism of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Democratic Senator and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for Hegseth to be removed from office.
In a statement posted on social media, Schumer harshly criticized Hegseth, saying, “Hegseth should be removed immediately.” Schumer argued that the problems faced by U.S. service members had been exacerbated by the defense secretary’s incompetence.
The controversy intensified following reports that the USS Abraham Lincoln crew had their deployment periods extended repeatedly as part of operations related to the conflict with Iran and had remained at sea for months.
According to reports in the U.S. media, at least two sailors aboard the carrier were allegedly prevented from attempting to jump overboard. Another sailor who reportedly fell into the sea was also rescued.
During the extended deployment, the crew was allegedly faced with shortages of basic supplies, hygiene problems, disruptions in mail delivery, and severe food restrictions.
Defense Secretary Hegseth denied the allegations, arguing that reports concerning the living conditions aboard the aircraft carrier were “completely distorted.”
The allegations over living conditions have turned into a political controversy in Washington, while the working conditions of the USS Abraham Lincoln crew and the impact of prolonged deployments at sea on service members remain in the spotlight.
