Slovenian National Assembly Speaker Stevanovic: We Will Hold a Referendum on Leaving NATO

Slovenian National Assembly Speaker Stevanovic stated that they had promised citizens a referendum on leaving NATO and that they intend to fulfill this promise.

Zoran Stevanovic, the newly elected Speaker of Slovenia’s National Assembly and leader of the anti-European Union Truth Party, said in an interview with a local television channel that they would resist being drawn into military and diplomatic conflicts in other countries.

“We will absolutely oppose involvement in the military and diplomatic conflicts of other countries, because this has never benefited Slovenia. At the same time, I must also emphasize that we promised the people a referendum on leaving NATO, and we will carry out this referendum,” Stevanovic said.

Emphasizing that he holds pro-Slovenian views, the Speaker noted that the country should pursue an independent and sovereign policy and cooperate with all nations, especially major powers. “However, this cooperation should in no way mean submission,” he added.

In the context of the conflicts in the Middle East, NATO is facing a major crisis. U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that NATO would be a “paper tiger” without the United States and has harshly criticized allied countries for refusing to support Washington in tensions with Iran. Germany and France also declined to participate in an operation aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas noted that member states are not ready to deploy naval forces to the Middle East.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that President Trump would decide on NATO’s future after the conflict with Iran comes to an end.
