The Norwegian government is preparing to ban social media use for children under the age of 16. The regulation is planned to come into effect next year.
The government has begun work on legislation aimed at restricting access to social media for those under 16.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told NRK, Norway’s public broadcaster, that the draft law is intended to reduce the negative effects of social media on children. He stated that the bill will be submitted to parliament within the year and, if approved, is expected to come into force next year.
Støre also noted that the government is working on a framework that would allow access to social media starting from the age of 16, ensuring that children in that age group can use such platforms simultaneously under the new rules.
NRK reported that under the proposed legislation, children under 16 would not be allowed to open social media accounts.
